Latest Information About Sanath Jayasuriya in 2016

Sanath Jayasuriya is a household name in Sri Lanka; he is what Usain Bolt is to athletics, or what Lionel Messi is to football. At a time when Cricket was viewed as the game for powerhouses like Australia, England, South Africa, etc, he helped catapult Sri Lanka to the international stage. He was as tactful as he was aggressive, skillful as he was brutal. He was every bowler’s nightmare. In the 1996 cricket world cup, Sanath left an indelible mark in the way one day international tests are done. Between 1999 and 2003, he was the captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team, a time that the country was able to showcase its immense talent and skills in the sport.

Sanath Jayasuriya has been described as the greatest cricketer that Sri Lanka has ever produced; others have gone as far as to term him as the cricketer of the century, and such colorful names. These may seem like exaggerated monikers to anyone who hasn’t acquainted themselves sufficiently with the achievements of this legend. In one particular instance, during a one day international, Sanath was able to score over 12,000 runs, then proceed to capture over 300 wickets! No other cricketer has achieved this in the history of the sport.

Sanath was to retire from active cricket in 2011, and was selected as the chairman of the selection committee of cricket in 2013, in Sri Lanka. During his tenure as the head of the selection committee, the country was to win the ICC World Twenty20 in 2014, something the country had never achieved before.

Life after Cricket;

After retiring from active cricket, Sanath rode on his popularity to contest for public office. In the 2010 general elections of Sri Lanka, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Matara district, which is his native district. He won by a huge margin, and would get nominated to serve as the deputy minister for local government under the government of the then powerful president Mahinda Rajapaska.  However, Sanath did not contest for any post in the general elections of 2015 and since then, he has taken a low profile.

Rumors have been rife in the Sri Lankan tabloids and gossip magazines, that he had married a popular air hostess, Maleeka Sirisenage. However, these rumors are unsubstantiated, and both Sanath and Maleeka have denounced the rumors. In fact, Maleeka has openly clarified that she is soon wedding someone else, and that Sanath is too old to be her husband, leave alone the fact that he has 3 kids from a previous marriage.
